Totton Angus Ranch, based in Chamberlain, South Dakota, is the result of decades of grit, discipline, and unwavering selection pressure. Charles Totton began ranching in the 1980s during the height of the farm crisis, a time when many operations were folding. With no land or cattle inherited, he built his program from the ground up, knowing from the start that survival meant running a low input operation. Over the years, he and his daughter Courtney Tyrrell have grown Totton Angus into a respected, grass-based program with over 400 breeding females, focused on producing reliable, functional cattle that last.
The backbone of the herd traces to a bull named Moderator PC 4034 and a legendary cow called PAR Traveling Broadside 563, known simply as N56. She lived nearly 18 years, raised calves until 16, and left behind a genetic legacy that still defines the ranch. In fact, over 75 percent of the herd today ties back to her. These aren't cattle built on fads or feed. They’re the product of long term linebreeding, strict culling, and a philosophy that prioritizes moderate frame, easy fleshing, sound structure, and maternal reliability above all else. Cows must raise a calf and breed back each year to stay in the herd. Bulls are evaluated not just on phenotype, but on the strength and longevity of their dam line.
Totton Angus bulls are developed with common sense and patience. No creep feed, no implants, and no shortcuts. Calves are weaned on grass and transitioned to a diet of forage sorghum silage and ground hay, with minimal supplementation during the coldest months. The cow herd rotates through native pastures and rough river breaks along the Missouri River, with intensive grazing management and winter swath grazing that reflects a deep commitment to soil health. Their land has served as a host site for the South Dakota Grassland Coalition’s grazing school for over a decade and has been featured in SDSU grazing and soil studies dating back to the early 2000s.
This isn’t a show focused operation, and it’s not run on spreadsheets or sales catalogs. Totton Angus is about proven results. The ranch keeps decades of handwritten calving records and reports everything to the American Angus Association. Bulls are expected to cover cows and stay sound while doing it. Fertility isn’t a number. It’s a requirement. No open cows are carried over, and no excuses are made. Customers regularly report exceptional experiences, including long lasting bulls and heifers that calve unassisted season after season.
The Tottons host an annual bull sale each May and sell bred heifers in the fall. They also finish a select group of open heifers on grass each year for direct to consumer beef sales. Two standout sires in their current lineup include TQ Masters Blend N56a, known for his moderate build, unmatched docility, and consistent progeny, and TQ Harvard J50L, a powerful linebred bull with strong maternal backing and a proven record on heifers.
Totton Angus Ranch is a great example of a breeding program that stayed the course. They never chased trends, never wavered in direction, and never compromised their core philosophy. Their cattle are a reflection of decades of consistent pressure, practical management, and hard earned wisdom, and it shows in every calf that hits the ground.
