History & Philosophy
Rancho Valle Colombia, located in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, has been dedicated to ethical and sustainable cattle ranching for over three generations. The land was originally purchased by Octavio’s great-grandfather, but before he could begin developing the ranch, he passed away. In 1939, at just 19 years old, Octavio’s grandfather took control. At the time, the family was on a lease near town under a contract for his great-grandfather. Before eviction, he gathered all his livestock and undertook a week-long cattle drive to what is now Rancho Valle Colombia. With no water, homes, or fences, the land was developed from the ground up through perseverance and dedication.
Since its inception, Rancho Valle Colombia has followed a holistic approach to cattle ranching, prioritizing the health of both the land and the animals. By implementing sustainable grazing practices, the ranch ensures that its cattle thrive on natural pastures, producing high-quality, nutrient-dense beef without reliance on hormones or chemicals.
The foundation of Rancho Valle Colombia’s genetic program was established through extensive travel across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Octavio’s grandfather sought cattle genetics from operations that did not pamper their cows, ensuring the hardiness and adaptability necessary to thrive in the desert environment. While he admired an Angus herd, it was beyond his budget, so he opted for Hereford genetics as the next best option.
Each year, he would purchase 100-200 bull calves from well-managed ranches, avoiding show-ring genetics. These bulls underwent rigorous selection, with monthly evaluations to remove those struggling to adapt. Ultimately, only 20-30 of the most resilient bulls were retained. His keen eye for cattle selection gained him a strong reputation, and he traded the bulls that did not fit his program at a 1:3 ratio for steers with neighboring ranchers. By the 1950s, he noticed that the bulls he was raising outperformed those he was purchasing, leading him to close the herd and rely solely on internal genetic selection.
Today, Rancho Valle Colombia continues this philosophy, selecting only the most adapted and fertile animals to perpetuate their breeding program. A cow must wean a calf every year to remain in the herd, and bulls are chosen based on their adaptation, fertility, and masculinity.
With over 70 years of selective breeding, Rancho Valle Colombia offers top-quality cattle known for their fertility, low maintenance, hardiness, and docility. These animals are highly adapted to thriving on natural forage, making them ideal for sustainable ranching operations.
The operation adheres to a strict grass-fed program, ensuring all cattle have free access to natural forage, fresh water, sea salt, and a balanced mineral mix. This method not only improves the nutritional quality of the beef but also supports long-term sustainability in the arid desert environment.
Rancho Valle Colombia’s commitment to grass-fed beef results in a superior product rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), and essential vitamins such as A and E. The natural pasture diet enhances the meat’s nutritional profile, with a distinct yellow fat hue indicating the presence of antioxidants like beta-carotene. Additionally, the beef is lower in cholesterol and harmful fats, offering a healthier alternative for consumers.
