For over 35 years, Marklands has been an intergenerational property, originally located in the Nebo region. Our commitment to breeding high-quality cattle remains steadfast, with a strong focus on sustainability and performance-driven genetics. Through long-term selection and the integration of genetics from reputable Australian seed stock producers, we continually seek to enhance our herd by sourcing new genetics from breeders who share our core values and breeding objectives.
Every cow in our program must calve annually, and young females must first prove their worth in the commercial herd before advancing to the stud herd. Pedigree and type alone are not enough—performance and results drive our decisions. Our herd sires are carefully selected from strong maternal lines, ensuring they exhibit correct feet and leg structure, a sound temperament, and a commanding sire presence. Structural integrity is key, with an emphasis on well-defined head shape, broad muzzle, and hooded eyes.
Our cattle are raised with a focus on practicality and adaptability. The breeder herds receive minimal supplementation, depending on seasonal conditions, and our steers are finished on Leucaena and tropical pastures or through custom feedlots. Sale bulls are prepared on a silage-based ration, while paddock bulls are raised and sold directly off grass, ensuring they are well-prepared for real-world conditions.
At Marklands, our primary market is within our own commercial herd, producing heavy-weight steers that meet industry demands. A select number of bulls are also sold through sales and direct paddock sales. Over the years, we have built strong relationships with repeat clients who face similar environmental challenges, and they continue to trust our program due to the proven functionality, longevity, and fertility of our cattle.
As a fully family-operated production, we take great pride in managing the operation ourselves, without outside employees. My wife, Sarah, and I oversee the daily workings of the operation alongside our four young daughters, ensuring that our values and dedication to quality are carried forward to the next generation.
Incorporating reproductive technology into our program allows us to enhance genetic selection while maintaining a practical and results-driven approach. We utilize artificial insemination but do not rely on embryo transfer. While we appreciate the role of data in breeding decisions, we prioritize real-world performance and structural soundness over EPDs, staying true to our philosophy of raising cattle that thrive in real conditions.
Marklands is built on tradition, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to breeding cattle that excel in both performance and sustainability. Our focus remains on producing functional, efficient, and durable cattle that meet the evolving needs of our industry and environment.
