History

Ohlde Cattle Company (OCC), based in Palmer, Kansas, has been supplying high-quality Angus cattle for nearly 40 years. The operation was founded on the principles of breeding efficient, low-input, problem-free cows suited for real-world conditions. From its early days, OCC focused on practical, functional cattle that thrive in forage-based systems while maintaining uniformity, structural soundness, and efficiency. A major milestone in their history was the purchase of an elite set of females in 1986, followed by their acquisition of 1/3 interest in DHD Traveler 6807 in 1990, a bull that became a cornerstone of the modern Angus breed. This strong genetic foundation has allowed OCC to develop a reputation as one of the premier Angus seedstock producers, providing breeding bulls and semen to cattlemen across the United States.

Breeding Program

Ohlde Cattle Company’s Basic Blacks program was developed with a focus on breeding low birth weight, strong maternal, cost-efficient, and easy-fleshing cattle that perform in forage-based environments with minimal maintenance. OCC has long emphasized balanced, multi-trait selection, recognizing that single-trait selection—such as chasing excessive growth or marbling—has led to cattle that are high-maintenance, inefficient, and impractical for real-world operations. Their breeding philosophy prioritizes fleshing ability on forage, capacity, udder quality, structural correctness, and disposition, recognizing that these essential cow herd traits often go overlooked in modern performance testing and EPD selection.

In addition to their registered Angus cattle, OCC developed their Angus II program, which features high-percentage Angus cattle (typically 7/8 Angus) that maintain the same maternal, structural, and efficiency traits but with additional hybrid vigor for improved fertility, performance, and milk production. These cattle, originally developed with an Amerifax base, provide a more economical yet genetically consistent option for producers.

Ohlde Cattle Company has remained committed to practical, profitable, and problem-free cattle, ensuring that their herd sires moderate size, improve structural soundness and fleshing ability, and enhance udder quality while maintaining efficient production levels. Their long-term selection pressure for maternal efficiency, moderate frame, and forage adaptability makes their cattle well-suited for producers looking to improve the sustainability and profitability of their herds.
