Gregorio Cabrera, a seasoned breeder of sustainable cattle in Mexico, has dedicated over 30 years to the industry. Forced to make a living from cattle at an early age, he quickly learned that the true key to profitability lies in breeding animals that are highly fertile and well-adapted to their environment. That understanding became the foundation for what is now Rancho la Victoria, a program committed to raising cattle that last.
Rancho la Victoria has been building cattle that stay fertile, raise a calf every year, and hold condition on grass in the heat and humidity of southern Mexico since 1994. When Gregorio’s father, Gregorio Cabrera Bernat, first purchased purebred Brahman females, he set the course for a herd meant to thrive where only the most functional cattle can. By 1997 the foundation was in place, and in 2013 the program expanded to include Guzerat, Nelore, Gyr, Sindhi, and Sardo Negro genetics, further strengthening adaptability and maternal consistency.
Gregorio has also adopted a regenerative agriculture approach to pasture management, integrating sustainable grazing practices with his low-input breeding philosophy. His advocacy for combining regenerative methods with sustainable genetics has helped shape cattle that perform efficiently on grass while improving the land beneath them. His efforts have advanced sustainable genetics not only within Brahman cattle but also within Guzerat and Nelore lines.
While many breeders in the region consider him unconventional for not adopting the mainstream high-input show genetics from the United States, Gregorio’s results speak for themselves. His cattle remain fertile, balanced, and productive without reliance on grain or feedlot-style inputs. He continues to advocate for breeding programs that align with natural principles, focusing on fertility, functionality, and adaptability as the true foundations of sustainable profitability.
Artificial insemination at Rancho la Victoria is practiced on natural heats beginning 30 days after calving and up to 120 days postpartum, supported by an active embryo-transfer program. Selection remains rooted in real-world performance rather than paper data, and the herd thrives under a tropical forage system supported only by minerals. Calves, cows, and herd sires stay on grass year-round, reflecting a program built around health, adaptation, and efficiency.
Gregorio remains steadfast in his commitment to raising cattle that endure, functional, fertile, and forage-capable animals shaped by the land they graze.
